Smoked Whitefish Crostini

The flavors of these crostini are truly classic - smoked fish, dill, creme fraiche and capers. However, for visual purposes, I love using caper berries for these - you can generally find them in the grocery store right next to the regular capers. I like to serve these up on small slices of baguette, but I season the crostini with sesame and poppy seeds. It makes it taste like an everything bagel!

This is a great sophisticated little bite to serve up at any cocktail party. They pair well with a fizzy and refreshing cocktail, like lemon-thyme Prosecco.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon white sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 a baguette (sliced into 20 (1/4inch) slices)
  • 8 ounces flaked whitefish
  • 2 tablespoon dill (chopped)
  • 6 tablespoons crème fraîche
  • 20 caper berries (halved)

Instructions

  1. As seen on: Giada in Italy, Episode 2. Italian Cocktail Party.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, onion, garlic and salt. Brush each slice of baguette on both sides with olive oil and spread them out on a rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle the seed mixture evenly over the bread. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned and crispy. Allow to cool to room temperature.
  4. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix together the flaked white fish, dill and crème fraîche with a rubber spatula.
  5. Top each crostini with a spoonful of the salad and top with 2 caper berry halves.
