Summer's Final Feast: Giada's Labor Day Menu

A Labor Day BBQ menu to close the season in style.


Labor Day is such a bittersweet holiday; one the one hand, it's the perfect long weekend to spend outside with friends, family, and lots of tasty treats. But there's no escaping that it also signals the end of summer, the days getting shorter and kids heading back to school (OK, that might not be so sad for the parents!). That's why I make sure to celebrate the holiday with a big get-together and a delicious meal that's short on prep time but long on summery flavor.
There have to be burgers, of course - these are an at-home version of the ones I serve at my restaurant in Vegas, with an avocado spread that adds luscious creaminess with a sunny California twist (my favorite!). Both the burgers and the side dish, fragrant buttery herbed potatoes, go on the grill to cook at the same time. A Mediterranean take on the classic Caprese salad can be assembled in advance and will only get better as the flavors mingle.
And don't forget the drinks! Rather than a sugary punch or basic beer, set up a station for Italy's favorite daytime sipper, the Aperol spritz. With just three ingredients, it's quick and easy for guests to mix up their own. It'll make the day feel like one long aperitivo hour, with no end of summer in sight.
