With Jade spending so much time on TikTok these days (okay, fine... and me, too!) we've seen plenty of the whipped coffee drink that's taken the internet by storm. While videos of people making this coffee got it popular, it's been around for much longer than we think - the Dalgona coffee originates in South Korea and India, and there's even a variety from Greece as well. What at first seemed like a novelty turned out to be something really genuinely delicious. The act of drinking it alone, and slowly mixing the fluffy coffee whip into milk, is a fun activity!

I decided to give it a personal spin by using espresso powder as opposed to instant coffee, and I've tried it with a variety of flavor mix-ins. Lemon zest gives it a great refreshing taste for a warm day, while cardamom or cinnamon give it a great warmth that pairs nicely with the sweetness of the coffee. I'd definitely classify this as a treat - it's the perfect fun coffee to make for that mid-afternoon slump!

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons instant espresso powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest (ground cardamom or ground cinnamon)
  • 1 cup milk of choice for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl combine the espresso, sugar, hot water and a pinch of salt. Using a hand mixer, beat on high speed for about 3 to 4 minutes or until thick, creamy and lightened in color. Add your seasoning of choice and whip 1 more minute or until thick and spreadable in texture. Fill two glasses with ice and add 1/2 cup of the milk of your choice to each glass. Top with the whipped coffee. Stir the whipped coffee into the milk and enjoy.

Gave this a shot on the last day of school here in Wisconsin – distance learning of course – to celebrate. My teens said they give it a 9 out of 10 and it was fun to put together. Really nice not spending a ton of money at a coffee shop but knowing we can make something like this at home anytime! We will be enjoying this one all summer! Thanks!
