Simple pantry items make a powerful exfoliator that won’t rub you the wrong way.
I’ve always been careful to be kind to my skin, since I first started wearing makeup as a teenager. It can be hard to find the extra energy for a multi-step skincare routine at the end of the day, but I find the ritual soothing, a little blast of me time that helps me relax and get ready to sleep. One of the most important steps in my routine? Exfoliating.
If you’ve been avoiding this step because you’re afraid of being rubbed the wrong way, you’re not alone. I avoid commercial exfoliants, because most of the big-name brands contain plastic microbeads, which flow straight from shower drains into our oceans and cause major problems for aquatic life. And natural or DIY formulas usually use sugar crystals to get that scrubbing action, which I find much too harsh and scratchy. Instead, I’ve cooked up my own ultra-gentle recipe, using skin-softening olive oil (is there anything it can’t do?) and fine-grained rice flour to rub off dead skin cells for a healthy, moisturized glow. Give it a try and you’ll be a convert, too.
