Giada’s glam guru Julie shares her top tips for travel
Giada travels – a lot – and it’s my job to make sure she never looks anything less than gorgeous, no matter where she is in the world. When she travels for work, I come along for the ride, but when she’s headed off on a family vacation, I give her a hand putting together the perfect makeup kit before she takes off on her adventures. Together, we’ve got packing makeup down to a science! These are the essentials I check for when putting together Giada’s travel makeup kit:
1. Check for the tin.
If you can see the bottom of the tin in any eye shadow or powder compacts, leave them at home! When your pressed powder is running low, it can easily shatter in the hustle and bustle of travel.
2. Always ask for samples.
Next time you’re stocking up on your favorite foundation, skincare – even perfume! – ask the salesperson if they can throw a sample of the same product in your bag. The teeny tubes are perfect to throw in a travel kit.
3. Stick to creamy, moisturizing products.
Dry air on planes can suck the moisture out of your skin. Be kind to yourself with creamy formulations that help rehydrate and won’t draw attention to any fine lines that can appear when skin gets dry. Giada lovesthis creamy contour & blush stick!
4. Leave the glam palettes at home.
Big, beautiful palettes that hold a dozen shades or are made out of luxe, heavy materials belong on your vanity, not in your suitcase. Think lean and mean when you’re packing palettes.
5. Check your SPF before you go.
Did you know sunscreen expires? The active ingredients in SPF products degrade over time, meaning if you’re past the expiration date on the tube, you’re not protected.
6. Do you!
If you only have room for one thing, make sure you grab your signature product – like Giada’s Chantecaille Radiance Bronzer. You’ll feel at home in your own skin, and that makes you comfortable no matter where you are.
7. Clean your containers.
If you decant foundation or moisturizer into a travel-size tub, never refill it without washing it out first. Products can go rancid, and bacteria from your fingers may be lurking in the corners. Tip: Throw them in the dishwasher!
8. Pack a good sharpener.
There’s nothing worse than a dull eyeliner. Make sure your lines stay sharp and clean throughout your trip by throwing a good-quality pencil sharpener in your bag – I love Make Up For Ever’s double-barrel sharpener.
9. Brush up.
Chances are it’s been a while since you cleaned your makeup brushes. Use travel as a reminder to give them a thorough wash before you go – baby shampoo will de-gunk them quickly.
