The oldest pharmacy in Florence, Italy has some pretty great gifts – and we figured out how to make one of our favorites at home.
Every time we visit Florence, there are a few places we always visit – we get the pear tortellini at 5Leoni, grab an espresso at Caffe Gilli, and we always meander through the Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella. This ancient pharmacy (one of the oldest in the world!) is a utopia of perfumes and age-old skincare recipes – matter of fact, it’s home to some of Giada’s very favorite products that she uses every day!
Now, in our perfect world we would be able to teleport to the Farmaceutica for all of our skincare and gift-giving needs – but unfortunately, it’s a bit out of reach. Luckily, we figured out a way to make one of their best gifts at home: hanging aromatherapy wax tablets. These beautiful wax tablets smell amazing and are studded with beautiful dried flowers and herbs. While we can’t replicate their beautiful packaging, we came pretty darn close to the product with our DIY version! If you know anything about us, you know we don’t have much patience for complicated DIY projects – so rest assured, this one is super, super easy.
You can use these tablets in an array of ways. Hang one in a small space like your closet or bathroom to fill the room with a subtle but lovely scent. They’re also so darn pretty, you can just hang one above your desk to make you happy (that’s what we did!). They also just make amazing gifts!
The most fun thing about DIY aromatherapy tablets is that you can really customize them to your hearts’ content. We initially went with a lemon scent (of course!) but you can use any essential oil you like, such as rose, lavender, violet or lilac. You could even opt for a blend! Grab whatever dried flowers, herbs, or aromatics you love and use them in your silicone mold. Even better? You can get literally everything you need on Amazon.
DIY Aromatherapy Tablets
What you’ll need:
Silicone molds (one batch fills about 6 tablets)
2 cups soy wax flakes
1 teaspoon essential oil of choice
Skewer or toothpick
Ribbon or string
How to do it:
Melt wax flakes gently over a double boiler. Once melted, add about 1 teaspoon of essential oil (for ours, we used lemon!)
Place lemon peels, dried herbs, or dried flowers to the silicone molds. Gently pour the melted wax into the tablets.
Once the wax tablets have cooled just enough to harden, but are still soft, take a skewer or toothpick and create a hole for string or ribbon, leaving at least half an inch at the top of the tablet. At this point, you can put the tablets in the refrigerator to quickly finish cooling.
When the tablets have cooled and hardened completely, gently remove from the silicone. Loop ribbon or string through the hole, and hang in your closet, bathroom, or anywhere that won’t get too hot!
