While you might recognize these as biscotti, that word means simply “cookie” in Italian! The proper Italian name for these twice-baked, sliced biscuits is cantucci, which comes from the Latin “slice.” Its origins can be traced back to the city of Prato in Tuscany in the middle of the 19th century when baker Antonio Mattei created an international sensation with these crisp little cookies. While cantucci can be found in countless flavor combinations today, this almond-studded version is closest to the traditional recipe.

The Bonci family has been making delicious sweets in the medieval Tuscan town of Montevarchi since 1953. They began by making typical local specialties such as panforte and cantucci using treasured family recipes and top-quality, all-natural ingredients. Their bread and cookies are leavened using a sourdough starter that has been in continuous use for over 60 years! But they’re not stuck in the past. One of Bonci’s guiding principles is innovation, constantly experimenting with new flavors and unusual combinations to keep their fans happy. That spirit led to the creation of panbriacone, a unique cake that quickly became one of their most beloved products. Today, the company’s motto is “goodness is a family vice,” and that goodness shines through in everything they do.
These light, sweet cookies have a delicately simple flavor with notes of vanilla and orange and crunchy Italian almonds throughout. Because they are extremely crisp, cantucci are traditionally dunked in espresso or vin santo to finish a meal. They make a wonderful addition to a coffee or tea break at any time of day.
